Alipay or WeChat Pay: which one to set up before flying to China

A first-day-focused comparison of Alipay and WeChat Pay for foreign visitors — what to install before boarding and what to verify on arrival.

Most foreign visitors landing in China for the first time want one thing on day one: a payment app that actually works at a taxi, a metro gate, and a convenience store. Alipay and WeChat Pay are the two main options. This note focuses only on the first-24-hour setup angle.

Set up at least one before you fly

App flows can change. Before flying, install at least one of the two apps, complete identity verification on home Wi-Fi, and add a foreign card through the in-app flow.

  1. Install Alipay or WeChat from your official app store at home.
  2. Complete identity verification on your home Wi-Fi.
  3. Add a foreign card through the in-app Tour Card / international flow.
  4. Make one small test transaction before leaving for the airport.
  5. Screenshot the success screens as offline proof.
Verify with official sources

Always check current setup steps on the official Alipay and WeChat Pay help pages — do not rely on third-party tutorials as the source of truth. App flows, limits, and verification steps can change without notice.

Plan for at least one backup

Even with a working app, payments can fail: card declines, app updates, network issues, or a merchant terminal that does not accept foreign-linked QR codes. Carry a small amount of RMB cash and a physical card as a backup.

First-day tip

Save your hotel address in Chinese characters in your notes app before flying. If a payment fails at the airport, you can still get to your hotel and sort it out from there.

If a link does not open

Some Chinese government, airport, and app-provider pages may behave differently depending on your browser, country, VPN, DNS, company network, or PDF preview app. If a link does not open, copy the visible URL, scan the QR code, turn off VPN, or try another browser/network.
